Wind Chime

Visualization of ecological data, 2023

During the course VISUALIZATION OF ECOLOGICAL DATA, the students attempted to creatively display data from the ecological system of Lake Balaton using data visualization methodology and tools.

The visualization shows the changes in phytoplankton biomass maxima in the Keszthely basin over decades, from 1965 to 2020. Visually, the work shows the extent to which the amount of algae has changed over 48 years.

We can read two types of data from the visualization: the amount of phytoplankton biomass in micrograms per liter, and the maximum value of phytoplankton biomass broken down into years.

The shape of the wind chime evokes the holiday homes in Balaton and the lakeside atmosphere, which creates a homely and nostalgic feeling in most of us. The main message of visualization is to draw attention to a phenomenon that is not visible to the naked eye, but is happening around us and is constantly changing in our environment.

The Project was created with the support of BALATORIUM, MOME and PAD.
